Ranger report map
The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation publishes a weekly report of Forest Ranger search-and-rescue work. We are turning two years of those reports into a map you can filter by region, season and type of incident.
What you will see
- Every incident as a point, clustered by region
- Seasonality: which months and which trails see the most calls
- A “most reported” table with a stated popularity tier, never a rate
What you will not see
- Names or ages of anyone involved
- Any incident a person has not reviewed and approved
- The phrase “most dangerous”; the data cannot support it
